Scottish Ballet and Forest Of Black asked us to create the title artwork and credit sequence for their new feature-length film, Starstruck. Inspired by dancer and choreographer Gene Kelly, the film is a cinematic rework of Kelly’s Pas de Dieux production that he created for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1960.

Our approach was to pay homage to the golden age of Hollywood. A lot of the cinematic artwork from that time was bold, graphical and handcrafted looking. We wanted to pay homage to this aesthetic without being a pastiche of it.

For the title artwork we looked to the time period for typography inspiration. We were keen to reflect the handcrafted imperfections present in 1950’s type styles. As a nod to the title, we added in a simplified star motif into the letter a.

We carefully selected a colour palette to reference the glamour and aesthetic of Hollywoods golden age.

We added a sculpted emboss effect to the artwork to give an updated and modern feel to the typography.

We used a clean and modern typeface For the opening credits and brought together two contrasting typefaces to create a 1950’s inspired rolling credit sequence. The headers were rendered in a retro looking artistic script while the other copy had a contemporary look to give a modern/classic style to the graphics.
